Bhai Mardana early life
Bhai Mardana Ji was born in 1459 at Rai Bhoi Di Talwandi, present-day Nankana Sahib (Pakistan) was originally given the name ‘Dana’.
His father, Bhai Badre, was a Mirasi Muslim named Bhai Badre. His mother’s name was Bibi Lakho Ji.
Bhai Mardana was almost 10 years older than Guru Nanak. Both Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Bhai Mardana were childhood friends.
Marjana to Mardana by Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s blessings
Bhai Mardana was his parents, seventh child. The six children that Mardana Ji’s parents had died early.
The family came into contact with Guru Nanak dev Ji to seek help for the early death of children in his family. Guru Nanak Dev Ji helped the family by taking Bhai Mardana away from his family so that his father and mother do not have to experience the pain of another child’s loss.
His family called him “MarJana” meaning, he will die. Guru Nanak dev Ji blessed his family and said from now on no children in your family will die early.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave him the name “Mardana”, which means a person who will never die.
Indeed, Bhai Mardana is still remembered, as he was the shadow of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on all his journeys.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Bhai Mardana
As Guru Nanak Dev Ji moved to Sultanpur, he started working in a store. At the time, Mardana was married and had two sons.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father asked Mardana to go and check in Sultanpur his son’s well being. Mardana went to Sultanpur but he never returned back.
When Guru Nanak Dev Ji prepared to go on his journeys to preach his message, he invites Mardana to come with him. He was one of the first Sikhs.
Bhai Mardana was bestowed with something that no other Sikh can claim. He spent 54 years of his life with Guru Nanak Dev Ji and He truly became his shadow.
Bhai Mardana was Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s most beloved companion. He played his Rabab wherever Guru Nanak Dev Ji went all his life.
Bhai Mardana fell ill at Baghdad, where he was buried by Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself. After his death, Mardana’s son Shahzada took over in giving assistance in Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s kirtan.
Bhai Mardana Ji and his Rabab
Mardana Ji played the Rabab wherever Guru Nanak Dev Ji went. He was a wonderful player and the Rabab never missed a single note.
Rabab is one of the first instruments associated with the Sikhs. It was a spiritual tool used by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Mardana to sing the glory of God everywhere they went.
Mardana ji played The Firandia Rabab which was a modification of the Afghani Rabab.
Death Anniversary of Bhai Mardana
28th November is the Death Anniversary of Bhai Mardana. On this day we remember him for all his efforts and a meaningful life he lived accompanied the first guru of Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Whenever journeys of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are remembered, Bhai Mardana will be remembered as well.
